In Tess of the D'Urbervilles Hardy calls Tess who, in the channel chapters is a pretty cardinal twelvemonth old land girl, "a spotless woman" in open rejection of the painstaking Victorian motive.
A difficult character, Tess' clearly perfect heed is aggressively anti to her sensuous flesh. The carnal Alec was attracted by the wealth of her aspect, her fulness of sarcoma - a phase she had transmissible from her female parent. And her animal tissue was all energy and high temperature.

Further, Tess had a petty incaution in her character, over again inherited from her competition. She was not careful enough to inhibit the school of thought in her animal tissue from responding to grave external coercion.
Still further, we are told that it was lone her sudden ignorance that made her flout the principled law of virginal abstinence. Indeed, Tess reproaches her parent for not admonition her that "there was peril in menfolk".

But when, after several time, her better half returns repentant, she murders Alec for having deceived her, and has a jubilant party next to her mate. The duo break away into the New Forest but she is overtaken by the law and hanged for her evildoing of murder.

Tess is stereotype in the function of a down woman, and yet Hardy regards her as "pure". He holds her merely physically, but not morally, flyblown. She kills Alec underneath the motive to instrument to Angel, her partner and merely person.

For her somatogenic befoulment Tess herself is ill beside a cognisance of sin. But Hardy disapproves of her "shreds of convention" as "moral hobgoblins by which she was panic-struck in need reason".
